The Parish Council has undertaken a review of the Parish Cemetery, which has included a health & safety and a risk review in accordance with current legislation.
The Parish Council is aware that this is a very sensitive matter and regrets that it must formally raise this in this way however it must put into place steps to bring the Parish Cemetery and all the plots in line with its current cemetery regulations.
There are numerous plots that do not currently conform to the regulations and generally the problems include:
• Vegetation and urns etc. on the plots when the regulations state 'lawn graves'.
• Memorials leaning or fallen down which require attention.
• Graves which have not been reinstated with grass to the required lawn grave standard.
The Parish Council therefore write to respectfully request that if you have a plot at the cemetery you read through the cemetery regulations which are displayed inside the gate and where appropriate take action to undertake any necessary work by the end of February 2009. Some of the graves with unstable memorials have already been marked.
Any plots in the cemetery not complying with the cemetery regulations by the beginning of March 2009 will be passed to the Council's contractor to schedule for work during the forthcoming year.
In relation to flower pots and plants that are on the lawn grave and not set within the memorial the Council asks that these are removed by the end of February 2009, otherwise they will be removed by the contractor and left at the side of the cemetery for a short period.
It is appreciated that many plot holders may be unhappy with the Council's decision and reading this notice. The Parish Council regrets that it has been necessary and it hopes that you will understand the difficult position that it is in when it has to consider the wider issues and legislation of running a public cemetery.
