Books are suggested by members and reviewed a few months later. We occasionally use reading guide questions and follow up links to specific author websites but the review process is usually very informal and we rate the book in four categories: Great Read/ Good Read/ OK Read/ Did not enjoy it

We have selected a wide range of themes and styles for the first half of 2011, do join us for any that interest you

The following are examples of books read over the last year

  • Kate Atkinson: "When will there be good news". Most rated it a GOOD READ  but one person didn't enjoy it all
  • Elmore Leonard: "Riding the Rap". Most rated it an OK READ but one person didn't enjoy it all
  • Dodie Smith: "I Capture The Castle". This was agreed to be either a GREAT READ or a GOOD READ
  • Jean Rhys: "Wide Sargasso Sea". Everyone agreed this was a GOOD READ or an OK READ
  • Kamila Shamsie: "Burnt Shadows". All rated this a GOOD READ
  • Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche: "Purple Hibiscus". Most rated this a GREAT READ but a few thought it only OK
  • Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrow: "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society" Most rated this a GOOD READ but a few thought it only OK
  • William Boyd: "Ordinary Thunderstorms" All rated this either a GREAT READ or a GOOD READ, except one person
  • Greg Mortensen: "Three Cups of Tea" (non-fiction). This elicited probably the widest range or responses from GREAT READ to OK READ. Most people found the subject matter of building schools for villagers in the Himalayas very interesting, but the writing style proved cumbersome and intrusive.
  • Jim Lynch: "The Highest Tide". Most rated this a GREAT READ but one person didn't enjoy it all
